Hombat participated on 23rd of September in the “High Level Conference on Advancing LGBTI equality in the EU: from 2020 and beyond” in Brussels, which was organized jointly by the Finnish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission.
Participants at the Conference –which included representatives from Member States, the European Parliament, the European Commission and civil society– discussed on how to advance LGBTI equality in the upcoming years and how to tackle current and new challenges. Furthermore, LGBTI data were presented from Eurobarometer, showing a significant improvement in how LGBTI people are perceived across the EU. However, discrimination remains widespread and more initiatives are needed, across Member States.
Αll speakers, during the fruitful panel discussion, emphasized that the educational environment plays fundamental role for the prevention of homophobia and transphobia, therefore teachers should be trained on how to face these incidents. Specifically, the representatives of Hombat presented to participants and stakeholders how the activities implemented so far can build the capacities of teachers and school advisors on preventing and addressing HT bullying in schools.
The participants and stakeholders highlighted that Hombat is successfully contributing to the advancement of LGBT equality in the EU, and relative capacity building programmes on how to prevent and combat homophobia and transphobia in school should be endorsed by the Member States.
